Rhode Island red

STANDARD | DUAL PURPOSE

The Rhode Island Red (RIR) is a great choice for any small flock owner. They are relatively hardy and may even be the best egg layers of the dual purpose breeds. Males may be aggressive, though our flock hasn’t encountered this, and production RIR hens are rarely broody.

our Rhode Island Red flock

The Rhode Island Red originated in the New England states of Massachusetts and Rhode Island. Early flocks often had both single and rose combed individuals because of the influence of Malay blood.

There are two strains of Rhode Island Red: Exhibition and Production. Production RIRs have been specifically bred to produce more eggs and more meat, making them truly dual purpose. Exhibition RIRs, while still maintaining their brick-like shape, are generally thinner and richer in color, showing that deep mahogany red that made me fall in love with the breed.

Our Rhode Island Red flock is comprised mostly of production reds that are selected for exhibition characteristics. We are in the process of breeding our RIRs toward SOP standards simply to “do the original breed justice,” as breed conservation is something we are passionate about.

It is widely stated that Rhode Island Red roosters are aggressive. However, we have never personally come across aggression in our flock. Our RIR roos have always been wonderful flock protectors and are kind to the ladies while our hens tend to be curious and docile, making them one of our favorites to visit throughout the day.

These are truly beautiful birds – and if you are looking for that movie-esque crow and look, you’ve certainly found it.
