STANDARD
Ameraucanas were introduced to America in the 1970’s, derived from the Araucana breed brought from Chile.
True Ameraucanas, like ours, have slate shanks, white bottomed feet, full muffs and beards, and lay only blue eggs.
BBS stands for Blue, Black, and Splash.
Quick Reference:
The Ameraucana chicken is one of the most popular chicken breeds in the world. They lay bright blue eggs and have a sweet and friendly temperament. They do well free ranging or confined and are weather-hardy chickens. Ameraucana have a pea comb which makes them less susceptible to frostbite compared to chickens with large single combs.
And my absolute favorite part? They also have muffs and beards that give them an adorable puffy face and neck.
BBS (or blue, black, splash) Ameraucana are a favorite on our homestead. Our blues are identified by their beautiful lacing, splash by their white feathers sprinkled with flecks of black, and blacks by their fascinating, iridescent green feathers. It is important to note that blue and self blue (lavender) are two very different colors and should be kept apart for breeding purposes. The lavender gene (LAV) is a recessive trait and breeds true, so a lavender bred to a lavender will produce only lavender chicks. Blue (Bl) does not breed true. See our Lavender Ameraucana here.
At Huxley’s Homestead, we breed for temperament, egg color and size, and toward SOP “type”. While Blue and Black Ameraucanas are currently accepted SOP varieties, Splash Ameraucanas are not. However, Splash has been submitted for consideration and might be accepted in 2021/2022.
Our Lavender and BBS Ameraucana are purebred with care and will be showing in the near future.
We offer both hatching eggs and chicks to share this beautiful breed with others. When ordering BBS eggs, you will have a chance of hatching a blue, black, or splash chick from each egg.
