silkie

BANTAM

The silkie is named for it’s atypically fluffy plumage, which has been said to feel like silk or satin. They are well known for their calm and friendly temperament – and for being great mothers. Read more about the breed and see pictures of our flocks below. Huxley’s Homestead currently offers Buff, Lavender, Paint, and BBS varieties.

our silkie flock

Did you know that silkies are all polydactyl? They all have five toes!

Other interesting tidbits include the fact that Silkies have black bones, black skin, and blue earlobes.

Marco Polo, in the 1300s, said in the earliest written account of silkies that they were, “fluffy birds with the hair of a cat.” I mean, come on. How can you say no to that?

I have come to find that silkies are some of the sweetest and most docile chickens out there and I knew having them on our homestead would be a staple. We currently carry and selectively breed four varieties of silkie; Paint, Buff, Lavender, and BBS (Blue, Black, Splash).
