Immediately. She became a crazy chicken lady immediately. One trip and 6 chicks.. Now we have over 100 chickens and we’re rocking it.
In 2021, a homestead on hand-me-down land was born in Pineville, KY. Our names are Katie and Dalton, and Huxley’s Homestead is named after our first puppy together, Huxley. He is full of love, curiosity, and laughs – just like our homestead adventure has been.
Huxley’s Homestead aims to promote self-sufficiency and environmental awareness while preserving both rare and production chicken breeds. We are also a no-kill homestead hatchery.
Our feather friends are fed an all-natural diet and are pasture-ranged on over six acres daily, to allow them ample room to forage like they are meant to.
Our dreams don’t stop here, and we plan on introducing goats and honeybees in the coming years.
Meet The Family
Dreamer | Caretaker
I’ve loved animals and the earth for as long as I can remember. As a toddler, you couldn’t keep me out of the ditch or the cornfield, always looking for critters and catching fish. As a matter of fact, I was often called to come in for lunch or dinner by my mother ringing the cowbell hanging on our porch. My curiosity and love for this life only grew stronger as I grew older. I traveled for years straight out of college and, while I deeply cherish that time, I knew in my heart that I was meant to grow roots, work the land, and be close to wildlife once again. I returned to Kentucky, took over the family home, and started working on my dream. Soon after, I met the wonderful man I started this Homestead with while he was interning in Kentucky. After a short time in Nebraska while he finished his degree, he joined me here. I can’t wait to see where this life takes us and to meet all of you along the way.

Originally a small town Nebraskan converted to Kentuckian. When I’m not working on the homestead, I am wandering the hills working with the Forest Service. Growing up on a ranch/farm, I realized this was a lifestyle I wanted to be apart of. While having 100 chickens wasn’t originally on the agenda, it is certainly an entertaining step forward. The military gave me many opportunities to expand my horizons and see the world, but it also locked in the fact that I’m a stationary person. This is when I truly knew I wanted to be a homesteader.

I like lots of attention and slowly crawling in your lap as soon as you sit in any chair. I always find my stick when it’s lost. My morning rounds consist of yeeting myself off the porch, warding off evil from the driveway, and patrolling behind the house. When the broody chickens chase me, I think they want to play. The rain is wet and I love getting muddy.
I’m 16 and I’m not a morning pupper. I like to wake up around 11am and then nap on the couch – I get lots of beauty rest and that’s why I’m so cute. I don’t have time to listen to your nonsense, but I love you and get super excited when you walk in the door after being outside for one minute. I’m not sure about Huxley; now, where’s my wet food, peasant?
I’m just 12 weeks old but I don’t act like it. I seem wise beyond my years and I’m calmer than my older brother – except when food is involved. I’m always sneaking the treats you feed to the chickens… but only because I need to grow big and strong to protect them from the terrors of the night (and day).
Update May, 2023: I am not calm; I am stubborn; I am horse.
